Nina LaCour shares the songs that inspired her latest novel:”Music was a central part of my high school experience, but when I was working on my first novel, Hold Still, I went out of my way not to mention band names. I wanted the book to feel timeless, so I only named bands that were already vintage. The Disenchantments, though, is a book about music. It’s also about love and friendship and that terrifying, exhilarating time when you are out of high school and finally free—but if it weren’t for the eponymous band, there would be no story. I resisted at first, but then I gave in and embraced all the band name-dropping I was going to do. I spent hours and hours watching YouTube videos of girl bands, from the fabulous Motown ladies to the badass Riot Grrrls, and as I wove them into the story, they became part of my characters and their journeys. Some of these songs are mentioned by name in the novel, many are alluded to, and all provided me with inspiration as I wrote. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!” –Nina LaCour
