We love getting questions from you guys. This one is from Warda, a reader who writes, “I have really sensitive skin on my legs, and every time I shave I end up with cuts and red marks all over. I don’t know what to do about it. I have tried a couple of different razors — none seem to make a difference. Is there a specific razor for this problem?”
I have this issue too, Warda! And so I talked to my friend Amber Katz, the brains behind Beauty Blogging Junkie (this girl knows her way around a drugstore beauty aisle), and this is what she had to say:
“I’m also plagued by razor burns and cuts and it’s taken me YEARS to find the right solution. It’s actually two-fold: You need to exfoliate thoroughly before shaving every time, then use a good razor and a shaving oil or cream with lots of hydration.
“Before turning on the shower (but do it in the shower to avoid a mess), apply a scrub dry to your legs and rub vigorously. Try Freeman’s Feeling Beautiful Sugar Pomegranate Scrub. Exfoliating with a scrub helps clear dead skin away from the hair follicle, allowing you to remove the hair easily without creating bumps (which are actually comprised of dead skin cell build-up).
“Then, wash it all off in the shower and lather up with either an oil likeEucerin Calming Body Wash Daily Shower Oil or a thick shaving cream likeSkintimate Cream Shave in Extra Gentle. My favorite razor for a close shave without irritation is the Schick Hydro Silk (pictured), which glides over my skin easily and minimizes cuts. The most important tip? Take your time. Most nicks can be avoided simply by shaving slowly. Happy shaving and good luck!”
Well, I know how I’ll be spending my evening. Thanks, Amber! Got a burning beauty Q? Write to us and we’ll try to answer!
