Cool Girl: Julia Bluhm, 14, Says “No” to “Perfection”

Even though we know not to compare ourselves to the “beautiful” models, actresses and celebrities we see every day in the media, it’s not always easy to escape self-criticism. After all, we’re human, right?

But thanks to people like Julia Bluhm, we have someone on our side advocating the presence of “real” beauty. This 14-year-old high school student from Waterville, ME has created a petition on Change.org, asking Seventeen magazine to run one unaltered fashion spread in each issue. This means no magic wands making thighs look slimmer or digitally erasing blemishes from faces.

“For the sake of all the struggling girls all over America, who read Seventeen and think these fake images are what they should be, I’m stepping up,” says Julia. “I know how hurtful these photoshopped images can be. I’m a teenage girl, and I don’t like what I see. None of us do.”

We’ve already signed her petition; if you feel the same way, you should too. Then take a look at a little documentary she made at her high school. Here’s to everything that makes us beautiful — warts, zits, scars and all!
